I'm from Cologne, Germany and watching your blog for a couple of weeks.
I'm trading for a couple of years with stocks and currently with CFDs. There are several tools I've used ... TradeSignal, MetaTrader and since last month NinjaTrader.
With NinjaTrader I'm interested in trading the future market, especially NQ and YM.
Hope to learn the things to go live with a strategy and handling the errors and drawbacks in realtime-trading.
Hello Mike and other Members,
First, I just want to thank you Mike for creating this forum and sharing your ideas on trading. It’s a pleasure and a much needed thing to have a place to go for an exchange of ideas and support from fellow traders. Over the last several months I have been checking out your posts on the Ninja Trader support form and have downloaded a number of your indicators etc. Thank you again, hope I can return the favor someday.
For a quick overview of my trading experience: April 2008 to June 2008: was focused on YM contract, running Ninja Trader with Zen Fire in sim and market replay modes. Also had Ninja Trader with IQFeed on a second pc as backup feed and for historical data /market breath data. Had one pc on dsl line and the other on cable for redundancy, cable pc also had TV tuner so I could watch Bloomberg/CNBC or whatever. I ran with 24” monitor on primary pc and two 22” monitors on secondary. I attempted to use various indicators (MA’s, CCI, MACD etc) and combine them with various time frames and Pivot/support resistance/Fibonacci levels. Mid June 2008 thru Mid October 2008 : Went live and had a roller coaster ride. I would win, loose, breakeven. I could not find any of the real consistency that I had hoped for. It was pure discretionary trading as I had no programming experience with Ninja Trader or any other software. In the end I hit my personal preset loss limit of -$5000 (actually hit -$5600) and closed my account and walked away. It was a great learning experience. I learned that I am not ready for this yet and saw the work I need to do to get there.
At present I am just doing research and have just started off learning to program in C#. My goal is to develop an automated system for trigger/order entry /order exit that I can run at my discretion. By that I mean I can choose to take long or short only, turn it on or off etc. I have been to Roonius’s web site (excellent) and took a look at his solutions for this. I don’t believe its possible for me to design a system that is fully automated as I do not think I have the ability to design one with the needed complexity to survive real time in all the various market conditions. I have messed around a bit with creating basic strategies in the Ninja Trader strategy wizard but find the output to be way, way too limited for going up against real market conditions for my taste. My guess is it will likely be 6 months to a year before I am ready to go live trading again.
I'm a "trader" from Portugal.
I'm not a full time trader, but that's my goal.
Having a full time job and a small account makes it even more difficult.
Usually i trade YM.
I'm following the markets for about 8 month, my main purpose for now is to learn, and i think Mike's blog and this forum would be an appropriate place to do it.
Hello all. Been dabbling with forex on a part time basis for 2-3 years. Time to get more serious and start increasing the bank account! Will help out if I can and at least share my opinion from time to time. Like to give back for all the kind hearted souls like Mike who have helped me get this far.
Thanks for the new home Mike
I'm a software developer, been trading for a few years but almost full time for a year and a half. I live in Paris and I'm currently working 1/2 time, I work in the morning at my real job and I'm home for the US open in the afternoon.
I was really into automated systems and indicators and after watching most of my systems fall apart I decided to learn to do it myself instead of trying to automate it. So that's where I am now. I day trade ES, and do swing trades on ES, Gold, Oil, and Euro. Although lately I've been learning to use breadth indicators for ES (TICK, advance/decline, etc.) so I'm thinking I should focus on ES and forget commodities for now.
I'm working on removing all price-based indicators from my chart.
