Elon Musk is wasting his time going to Mars. Mars is a dead planet with no magnetic field to protect it from solar radiation. The only place in the solar system where people can live is Earth. It's a shame Elon Musk doesn't spend his money to solve problems affecting life on Earth. He's wasting it to walk on a dead planet and build expensive toy cars for the wealthy.
Long plan is to colonize Mars so that when we are done rubbishing this planet we have another to go to.
I wouldnt call it building expensive toy cars for the wealthy but more have a launch pad for revolutionizing the auto-motive +transport, battery and solar industries.
All the fan boy aside, he wouldnt have his wealth to "solve problems affecting life on Earth" without these grandiose plans and companies to get achieve them.. so catch 22 there.
I'm excited to hear the Master Plan part 2 today or tomorrow. And I know he'll accomplish most if not all what he sets his mind too. Haters are just jealous of the man's success and accomplishments.
I don't hate Elon Musk. I just hate what he's doing (dislike actually but whatever). I wouldn't say I'm jealous of his accomplishments because they are not things I would want to accomplish if I were in his shoes. It's great to be successful and accomplish a lot but what you choose to accomplish is more important in my opinion.
Once antibiotics were invented (still considered a popular move) it set in motion a population growth curve that means we have no choice but to go to space. When I was born 40 ish years ago the world population was 2.x billion, now its 7+.
The current antibiotic crisis is being solved with new sources from soil cultures & novel meta-materials so no population respite for the planet is likely.
If we don't find a pressure release, we will kill everything but us on the Earth.
Edit: For anyone who likes noodling the near future of space development & also smart project management . A free source short story called 'Out of Copyright' (audiobook version on top for trading) available https://clarkesworldmagazine.com/sheffield_09_13_reprint/
Thanks for the different perspective, but your perspective and those of many others is exactly why I dislike what Elon Musk is doing. He is pushing this idea that we can colonize and live on Mars. This is a fools fantasy, a delusional dream that will never provide a practical solution for the over population problem you describe. Without a magnetic field, Mars cannot hold an atmosphere like we have on Earth. Some have suggested slamming an asteroid into Mars so it might generate a magnetic field. That could be dangerous if a stray piece heads toward the Earth and its very doubtful we could pull it off successfully. The only other option is to build a big metal box on Mars with walls capable of shielding its inhabitants from radiation. Who wants to spend their life living in a metal box on a lifeless planet? I'd rather die on the Earth. On second thought, I'd rather work on solutions to the problems that are making people think we need to leave the Earth. We are stuck on this planet and the sooner we realize that the better off we'll be.
