I was trying to enhance my day trading skills using Footprint charts for ES, NQ, and FDAX when I came across the option between minute and range bar charts. In general, I like minute charts, although it appears that range bars provide better entry pricing as long as the market does not move too quickly.
I'm curious about your experience with range bar trading and what your settings are for individual futures (EU vs. US session). So far, I've tried trading ES with an 8, NQ with a 16, and FDAX with an 8-bar range. I combined those with VWAP std. dev. for entries -> only short signals above VWAP vice versa.
Any advice is much appreciated!

I tried range bars (10R on MES, MCL, MGC with a 30R HTF context) for awhile because I got frustrated by my indicators getting so skewed with the change in volatility between the overnight and US sessions on futures. I still like range bars but to me they have a big disadvantage in that you can't "see" time without another indicator, whereas time bars show price per time (volatility) much better. In looking to smooth out the change in volatility between the two different sessions, I ended up blurring it too much, and I found I wanted that information back.
This thread has some good info on range, even if it is more focused on cumulative delta/footprint charts (@Sylvester17 used range bars exclusively and was very helpful on this thread, so searching for his posts would be my suggestion):

This is a bit of a classic. The OP used volume bars, but his method was all about isolating time and he explains clearly what we was looking for. Definitely some parallels to range bar trading:
