yes the robots are working on globex....however, i don't think they are as active in the Asian session and late in the NY session (3 to 4 pm CST...treasury futures settle at 2 pm). Once Europe opens though the robots are working....The last year i traded at night i would trade treasury futures from 2 pm to 4 pm and then the Asian session (5 pm to 1 am CST). It was a 'low risk' time for me to trade. Once Europe opened it became high risk and very difficult to execute spreads.
Anyway, at least for spread trading (mean reversion type stuff) the best aspect of it was the switch from New York to Asia to Europe back to New York. A lot of time the spreads would come back in line when the time zone changed. This has changed but nevertheless i think there are good opportunties when the "time zone changes (i.e Asian to Europe)" for almost any mkt you are trading.
Night trading can be very boring...a lot of ESPN viewing, Seinfield etc....and old movies....but when it moves there is a lot of opportunity. I don't miss it though and i am much happier having a normal sleep schedule.
The treasury curve trade is really hard now and I just could not handle the night schedule anymore. HFTs have made scalping the curve very difficult and it was time for me to try something else.
