I got to thinking about Workspaces. So I decided to create individual Workspaces for each setup(s) that I’m testing and setup(s) that I’m trading with from day to day. So over the weekend I’ve created 9 Workspaces. Each one has its purpose and I thought I was doing something good. Come to find out during Monday/Tuesday trading day(s) that I’ve noticed some performance issues with Ninja Trader. What I didn’t realize is that when Ninja Trader is loading it also loads all your Workspaces that you had previously opened. I got to thinking about it and it didn’t take long but I come to realize that the performance issues was coming from loading all 9 Workspaces. I shut down Ninja Trader and removed all except the Workspace the one that I’m trading with.
To avoid this situation is when you open up a Workspace or create a new Workspace is to close the prior Workspace first then open up the other Workspace. Upon exiting Ninja Trader it will display a dialog box asking to save Workspace(s). That’s right, it will ask to save each Workspace. Why does it do this I have no idea.
You would figure having 8gigs of memory, 300+ gig hard drive(s), AMD X3 processor, and 1 gig of memory on the video card that Ninja Trader performance shouldn’t have any issues.
I haven't tried "Ninja 6.5 largeaddressaware hack" to see if the performance issue would improve. Maybe I'll give that a try next weekend.
This is a major flaw of how NT uses workspaces and handles memory.
in tradestation each workspace contains its windows. I often have 10 workspaces open, each one with 3-4 charts. That'd be 40 windows if I were using NT! In TS I can switch between them in just 1 second. It's very fast. Makes it very easy to monitor several markets. I wish NT would catch up with TS on the workspaces...
I use a daily back up to a 2nd hard drive of everything. I use incremental so it's really fast except for the 10th day when it does a full backup. I use true image from acronis for this.
I also use Mozy to backup just my most important files which include all my Ninjatrader files (templates, workspaces, indicators, strategies). The free 2gig account is plenty for this so you don't pay anything! I already have them backed up but I figure having a 2nd offsite backup is a good idea. I highly recommend it, if you sign up please use my link:
Mozy
Finally, once a month I do a full backup with trueimage to a 500gig WD Passport USB drive and I keep this one at work. My 2nd offsite backup for critical files and first offsite backup for non-critical files.
With all that the chances of losing something are next to zero.
For those of you interested and unaware I thought I could notify that the feature request of having all chart windows in a workspace gathered in one single window has been assigned tracking ID #154.
It will be a day of happiness, delight and when it comes...
