Gosh, when it comes to debunking the lies of this White House, you don't have to go to a liberal skiff like Jon Stewart, just talk to someone at the State Department:
To me, this one is not applicable. When it comes to terrorism, and matters of national security, there can be valid reasons why certain details need to be withheld from the public, in order to assess, control, curtail, plan, prevent, or respond to the situation without alerting or bolstering the enemy. Those are tactical decisions of engagement. You broadcast on a CNN breaking news, you have an embassy currently being successfully assaulted by terrorists, and within 30 minutes, you potentially have 3 embassies burning down. Not saying the current administration has no lies, but I'm sure you can come up with some better ones
You may be right, Monpere, but I firmly believe that pretty much everything the current administration does is in response to the question of "How does this help us politically?" as opposed to "How does this help the American people?"
In a national democracy we shouldn't worry about the internal states of our political instruments. I've never understood the obsession with what they "really think." The bottom line is we use national politicians to implement policy, and that's all we can possibly do.
Now in the local community that's different, because local communities feel more like tribes than nations. But at the national level there's no point in trying to read someone's mind. That's an fundamental anthropological problem with our system - it's not designed for the communities we are genetically determined to live in (sounds like trading, huh?).
I don't really have time to get into it at the moment so I will come back to this. For now, Glass Steagall is not somthing a regulator would need to regulate. It had nothing to do with the financial crisis, aka, the banking collapse. GS is an industrial organizational - structural issue. In today's world market's the US would not be able to compete for financial services as every country has adopted the same structure, from Canada to German and of course China. Allowing an investment bank to merge with a retail bank in theory is no different than say company like Coca Cola owning a restaurant chain and a chemicals company. The companies are kept separate on consolidated financial statements.
You can think of regulators as you think of policeman. Would it matter that robbing a convenience store at gunpoint was illegal if there were no police to monitor the criminal activity? What caused the collapse was the use of derivatives and off balance sheet accounting. This subject matter does require some advanced knowledge. I will let you do your research and get back to you when I have time. GS is meaningless however, in the context of the financial crisis - banking sector collapse.
You will note that Canadian and German banks were backstopped by their respective Feds only because the share prices plunged 1:1 with the US banks due to the correlation effect of the crisis. They did not have toxic balance sheets, however. This is a matter of regulation. Look it up.
Well all I commented on was your assertion that TARP was going to be paid for by future taxpayers. I simply pointed out that TARP has made nearly 100% of taxpayer money back and so will cost nothing. I'm quite sure we disagree on other things but changing the subject is not a valid way to win an argument.
QE is just reflective of the fact that the fed has limited policy tools at its disposal but is being held responsible for controlling inflation and "stimulating" the economy. All the fed is doing is providing liquidity because banks are demanding excess reserves (ie, bidding the overnight rate in the fed funds market up over the target set by the fed).

Almost every single state that allowed for individuals to participate in a delegate selection process, after that state's initial straw poll (caucus) concluded, so-called GOP “officials” participated in unimaginable rules violations and practices to prevent Ron Paul and his supporters from gaining any momentum or having any success, without any demand for accountability by anyone in the GOP establishment or the mainstream media.
They went to such extremes as submitting fake slates of delegates to the convention floor, subverting or breaking many other rules if Paul's supporters were winning convention battles, physically assaulting supporters, kicking them out of local, regional or state conventions and even having them arrested to prevent participation.
Had the media been honest about the process, been honest about who was winning the polls prior to the beginning of the election season and demanded fairness and integrity throughout the process, it is very likely Ron Paul and his truly educated and conservative values, policies and ideologies would have won out with the conservative American constituency. - RTR.org - Latest News - GOP Now Ironically Begging Ron Paul Supporters for Help
