Eating whole food within your BMR or less than is really the only way long term. Calories in vs. calories out. It's sad but eating normal aka whole food has now become a lifestyle thing rather than what's expected. Don't get me wrong I eat pizza, burgers, tacos, etc. It doesn't have to be boring.
Regardless, good luck with it. I hope it brings about positive changes.
There is no harm in fasting. I have been doing it once a week for the past month and have been losing weight. Last meal on Saturday 18:00 and breakfast on Monday morning at 09:00 which is 39 hours with no food only water. The trick is to eat light (fish, nuts, vegetables etc) for the next 3 days because if you go large you undo the hard work.
I'm doing the 72 hours to test my resolve. Secondly to lose the goddamn muffin tops and get shredded abs. I know the fuckers are there because I work them twice a week and when I press my finger through the fat i can feel the bricks. 3rd is because I want to see if there are any health benefits to this. Not gonna know if I don't try.
