If you are buying multiple monitors, then the 24" is the sweet spot. Just add up total resolution vs total price, you'll likely find 24" is optimal for multiple monitor purchases.

I think displayport or hdmi is required for resolutions over 1920x1200, which is the limit of DVI. But I don't know this for sure, and even with a 24" monitor 1920x1200 should be the max native res...

Personally I would not consider anything larger than 24" as you'll have a hard time finding a quad monitor stand that supports them, and they are just too big. Better to do six 24"'s than four 27"'s...
