Yes, a signature is global for all posts. But URL's don't work in signatures, this was actually something we did to prevent spam a long time ago. I ended up disabling signatures all together...

Honestly, there is basically no disadvantage and I'd never state it as such. If you examine the active users you'll find something like 95% are Elite. I imagine the thanks you receive falls in line...
