I assume You could simply pull up a monthly chart of each symbol and apply a volume indicator for it. I know Tradestation allows this. I’m not sure if the volume indicator will show accurate volume...

IMO the less optimization the better because you have less chance of overfitting the data. However I could see that intraday systems might require a bit more optimizations than a longer term holding...
