I’m looking into VPS setups for automated trading and wanted to start a discussion with other traders.
A VPS is basically a remote computer hosted in a data center. You can install your trading platforms and EAs on it, then access everything from your own PC. The main appeal is keeping strategies running even when your home computer is off or your internet drops.
I’ve been checking out MT5 VPS and even tradingfxvps as an option, but I’d like to hear from people who have actually used it or other VPS providers.
A few things I’m curious about:
How reliable has your VPS been during market hours?
Which location do you use for your broker?
Have you run into issues with reboots, lag, or running out of memory?
What trading platforms or automated strategies are you running?
Feel free to share your setup, both the good and the bad. Real-world experiences would be helpful.
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
I'd like to drop some objective facts and technical considerations regarding your questions, something that can serve as a solid, unbiased foundation for your VPS decision.
Reputable providers guarantee 99.9% to 99.99% uptime in their SLAs (Service Level Agreements). This is physically backed by redundant power and network connections in Tier-3 or Tier-4 data centers. Actual reliability can be verified objectively through the provider's independent uptime monitoring logs.
2. Location relative to your broker
Network latency is pure physics. For order execution under 5 ms, the VPS needs to be located in the same data center (e.g., Equinix LD4 in London or NY4 in New York) as your broker's execution server.
What's missing for a concrete answer here: Members would need to be known which broker you're using and where their servers are physically located. Without that info, any location recommendation is just a shot in the dark.
3. Reboots, lag, and RAM
Reboots: Planned restarts for Windows security updates are standard (ideally on weekends). Unplanned reboots indicate hypervisor level issues.
Lag: Often occurs on cheap "shared" VPS plans due to "CPU steal time" when other users on the same physical server cause load spikes. The fix: plans with guaranteed, dedicated vCPU cores.
RAM: The demand from platforms like MT4/MT5 scales directly with the number of charts and indicators.
What's missing for a concrete answer here: It would need to be known how many instances/charts you plan to run simultaneously and how resource intensive your strategy is. (Rule of thumb: 2 GB RAM for 1–2 instances, 4+ GB for multi-chart setups.)
4. Trading platforms and strategies
MT4, MT5, and cTrader run natively and stably on Windows Servers. Linux VPS setups require emulation (e.g., Wine), which demonstrably increases the risk of EA incompatibilities and crashes.
What's missing for a concrete answer here: The exact trading platform and the type of strategy (e.g., scalping with high tick frequency vs. swing trading) are necessary to concretely assess hardware requirements and the suitability of a specific provider.

It appears that there are some interests on running automated strategies on VPS. I am creating this thread to share experiences and to find help related to VPS.
First, VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. From a trader's point of view, it is like …
What is the highest win% you have seen a DAY TRADING trading system, automated or manual, have?
I've seen claims of 70-80% profitable but Never seen this replicated during live market conditions.
I understand the difference between win% and overall …
Things to know:
- MT4/MT5 requires more CPU and RAM resources than more modern/better coded platform (NinjaTrader, Multicharts, Sierrachart, ...)
- there are extremely cheap VPS provider for MT4/MT5: they are quite bad (very slow and not very reliable)
- in general, if it's too cheap, there's something wrong somewhere (fake Windows license, high resources overselling, ...)
- MT4/MT5 data servers can be anywhere, not in a New-York/Chicago, so to find where should be hosted the VPS check where your MT4 instance is connected to:
-> find to which IP addresses is connected Metatrader (Windows Resource Monitor -> Network -> select metatrader.exe -> TCP Connections)
-> with the IP, https://ipinfo.io/<IP found> and, from a PowerShell window, tracert <IP found> to confirm the location.
I'm using Interserver since 5 years.
Started with 6 slices.
I do mainly algo on NT8. Now my algo portfolio is over 140 algos and I added a couple of trade copiers.
I recently start running one MT5 as well, so I upgraded gradually to 15 slices.
I'm quite happy except for the frequent restarts required by windows upgrade...
