sysot1t - thanks for your help. The HP Outlet was the way to go...
I think I got a good deal. Normally $849, for $599:
HP z200 W7P-64 i5 650 3.2GHz 500GB SATA 4GB DDR3 1333 DVDRW(LS) NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 256MB Rmkt WS
I also got these two 24" monitors, for $320 each:
HP 24 inch ZR24w Widescreen LCD Rmkt Monitor
These are IPS panels and 1920 x 1200.
Free shipping too... Thanks again. I'll add more RAM once I open the box to see the configuration.
I'll get another NVS 295 too. That will be an x1 though. But, as you said, it should be plenty fine for these tasks. I read that each lane (x1) can handle 500 MB. The most we'd be doing might be around 100 kb /sec... I also read that the x1 slot might have a max wattage of 10 w though. If so, that would be problematic for a video card. The HP Outlet guys didn't know that spec though...
I attach the most current availability, in case anyone is interested....
why not just look at the NVS420 or NVS450? you can get it for under $450.. and just find a Z200 with a regular card... or cardless... then get yourself 16GB and an SSD... I dont know.. just some thoughts... otherwise... PCI and PCIe are not the same form factor, so that would be a no.. since the NVS295 comes on x1 or x16 of PCIe...
Trying to call HP now... Looks like it is too late though. I already placed the order sysot1t.
I believe I can just get the NVS 295 in a x1, to join the NVS 295 x16 that comes with it... If you feel that will make for a problem, please let me know. They said that if my video desires are not stratified, I can return it for free, even shipping back, within 10 days.
it all comes down to what you want, dont split too many hairs.. you can spend all day going back and forth trying to figure things out... ... adding the NVS295 x1 should be more than fine.. you just cant do PCIe into PCI.. that is the only thing...
IMO, you just need more RAM and if you have the budget, add an SSD for the OS and binaries, and leave the 500GB for data(non-trading data that is...) I picked up the kingston SSD 96GB for under $150 a few months back and added another 750GB drive to mirror the one I had.. so my OS/Binaries are on SSD and the data is on a pair of 750GB mirrored... I had no need for the 2TB drives, so I just paired up the old 750GB I had..
When you say, "you just cant do PCIe into PCI..." that simply means that I cannot put PCIe devices into PCI slots, right? Just want to make sure...
More RAM will happen immediately.
I know SSD's are nice as I currently have a Lenovo W510 from my employer. Start-up and power-downs are much faster, and it's quieter. Are there any additional gains or positives with a trading computer? To be honest, if it only allows me to boot-up faster, I don't feel that would be worth it for me. If it helps in other, more important ways, please do share. And, would this Kingston SSD be external? Not sure if the Z200 can accommodate this internally... I like the idea as you explained it though. Thank you.
Correct, completely different. PCI Express is not compatible with PCI or PCI-X. As for x1, x8, x16 etc, for 2D charting applications there will be no real difference.
Pretty slick. I'd still be curious to hear the benefits gained by doing this. I think it was in another thread where the benefits of SSD were discussed, and I seem to remember walking away thinking that they were not much in the way of actual trading. I value your input on such matters, so when time permits...
Mike, thanks for the confirmation.
sysot1t, back to RAM...
After reading the specs for the Z200, it has 4 slots, and 4 GB ships with 2 x 2GB. So, two open slots. 4GB is the max per slot. So, I'd like to add 8GB upon arrival, for 12 total.
The HP website describes the memory as:
"PC3-10600 DDR3-1333 ECC Unbuffered DIMM".
With that, would this be the right order? Seems to be, but I see no reference to "unbuffered", so I want to be sure. If so, I'll order two...
The main benefits I got had to do with my disk access to timeseries for MC/MD/TradeVec.... history is stored on disk, and at times, I dont feel like waiting too long for (more than a few seconds) when I am switching timeframes or instruments ... I am impatient some times.. that is all... so I try to address anything that might frustrate me with technology... $150 is not bad to me when it makes the difference between my moods..
