I like that option better as opposed to downloading and installing an app. Thank you.
I called HP tech support earlier and he confirmed that I have 2 PCIe x16 slots that can be used for video cards. He thinks I was told that I'd have one of these because that's the case for SFF boxes, which I did not order. Go figure. So, I could keep the NVS 295 x1 and run 6 monitors, but I'll return it and get a refund. Costs me about 6 bucks, but the NVS 295 x16 is about 10 bucks cheaper, so no big deal there..
I tried removing IE and other programs in the Programs folder and was informed that I cannot. Task Manager reveals that IE is running, even when the browser is not open. Tech support said that this is normal and that IE cannot be removed as it is needed for Windows 7. He said that a fresh install of Windows 7 will have IE running in the background. I had asked about formatting the HD and starting from scratch by installing the OS, and that was his response.
I just want this system lean, but I'm sure it will have plenty of oomph regardless, so maybe I should't get wrapped around the axle trying to clean or remove every little item...
I'm going to install MC and Google Chrome with bookmarks only to: the MC website, broker (OEC) and possibly this great forum. Would I still need virus protection software? Gosh, I hope not. I'm behind a router... And if I do need such protection, would it only be because of the browser and visiting those locations? I can otherwise have no browser and just connect to the web through MC only (trading purposes). I have an iMac on the other side of my desk for email and browsing... Thanks for the continued input.
I have MSDN, so i never use the os that comes with the machines... i also prefer lean installs. as to the AV, download Microsoft Security Essentials at the very least.
I just downloaded MSE onto a flash drive, as well as Google Chrome. I had installed MSE on my mom's computer when it first came-out, and had forgotten all about it. Thanks.
I'm going to work on managing the start-up programs too. It appears that has not changed for Windows 7:
I got the NVS295 PCIe x16 from HP. It was like pulling teeth, and took longer than it should have, but I'm square with them now. The Z200 is very quiet alright, and while not a SFF, it's a fairly small box, which is nice as it gives me more legroom under the desk...
Since it has two PCIe x16 slots, contrary to being told just one, I ordered another NVS295 PCIe x16, through Amazon. I'm currently running those four HP monitors (HP ZR24w, 1900x1200, IPS), with two on the NVS295 PCIe x1. I'll either return that card, or keep it, allowing me to run 6 monitors, should I choose to do so. At least I'd be on-topic for this 6 monitor thread!
I also ordered more of the same RAM, so I'll be at 16GB next week. I'm running with 12 now, but figured I'd sell the pre-installed RAM and get to 16... Let me ask you, with the 12GB now, with my computer at "idle", CPU is 0-3%, and RAM usage hovers around 14 to 15%. Sound about right?
And, if you don't mind, one last question... The NVS295's came with install CD's, as did the 4 monitors. I have not used those. When I look at my hardware list (I think in Device Mgr), it simply has "generic monitors" or something to that effect, not the exact model. Is there something to be had by using these install CD's? I know they often contain superfluous stuff, but I wonder if specific drivers and apps might exist that can make a difference...
Other than the above, I'm trying to get MC set-up on this system. It doesn't exactly port-over all that easily, but I will work on it again tonight. I have all 4 monitors in portrait mode, in a slight C-shape around me, and it looks really nice. The height is perfect and I see no need for a multi-monitor stand. I also sense that these 4 monitors will be enough...
my mem util usually ranges and varies as well, take a look at your running processes and see what hey are consuming... also as to the drivers, I always find it best to download the latest drivers for video from the nvidia website.. never use the ones from the CDROM... usually, they are out of date.
Great suggestion. I will go to the Nvidia website next...
The CPU 3.2 GHZ, registering 3.33, I think due to Intel's auto turbo, or something to that effect. Would you do a modest overclock? And if so, I heard something about overclocking of RMA also? Maybe I should dork with it, just wondering...
dont bother overclocking.. it wont make a diff to you... honestly, people go nuts with tweaking their desktops to gain a few ms and sacrifice stability... for discretionary trading, it will make no difference, it might make a difference when backtesting/optimizing a strategy, depending on the platform.. but do you really want to curve fit the future based on the past?
anything over 3GHz is more than adequate... just tweak things to gain stability.. that is what matters the most.. not crashing while on a trade..
Sorry if this information comes too late - it's relatively new to me.
Getting a 6 core CPU instead of a good 4 core isn't worth it for trading on NT because only one core is used on live trading.
When ordering a workstation from Dell, HP or Lenovo; only paying for 2 or three gb of factory ram, but then buying 12 gb (in 3 strips) of compatible Crucial or Kingston to put in after (easy to install), should save $550-700...
A downside could be that the company gets pissed at what you are doing and will not inspect voltages as carefully. I ordered another workstation (Dell T3500) and noticed it shipped in less than 1/4 the time of their estimation.
