I think an iPad is really just a tad too big (or mainly too heavy). I like the idea of a one-handed tablet, it is the right size. The iPad is 10" I think, the Transformer 2 is 10" I think, and Fire is 7".
I'll chime in with my two cents having owned an iPad since they launched. Basically you need to decide what you MUST be able to do and what would be a nice to have. I'll confess that I don't think that tablets are "necessary" devices. They don't do anything that our PCs don't already do better.
I can tell you though that I love my iPad. I use if for everything and have little need for a full laptop at this point. I do email, browsing, a few games, stream netflix, stream movies from iTunes etc. I can lug around a blue tooth keyboard if I have to really type fast. I don't think anyone can touch the experience the iPad provides, but Amazon may be the closest. Go to the store and play with a couple of the devices and see which one works the best for you doing what you want it to do. Clearly Amazon has everyone tempted with an impulse price of $199. I just bought three of my kids the new $79 kindle so that I can continue to rid the world of paper.... :-)
Mike, I also noticed that you list the EUR/USD as your favorite instrument now. I thought you were a CL guy? Do you have a thread on your approach to Forex, Platform, Broker, etc?
I've got the Asus Transformer and I love it. (with the keyboard option) So very versitile.
I've considered the Fire but I think the Samsung Galaxy is probably a better option or the new Asus 7" that will be out soon.
I've found that being able to transfer files via the SD card is a great feature to have.
Also, the Fire is limited in what Android Apps you can load. (only the ones on Amazon).
I don't like to be limited.
So I'm waiting for the new Asus to see what it does, but one consideration on any new Android device is that the latest version of the Android OS will be out about the time the Fire ships and it may not be upgradable to that OS.

Hmm good point, might be a good idea to cancel the preorder and shop around after it comes out - especially if someone bucks up some competition at the same price point
I'll probably let my pre-order stay. There is no risk to me, 30 day money back policy of Amazon on all Kindle products.
I think perhaps the better thing is to see if other manufacturers drop prices right at Kindle launch, and then buy one or two of them and compare it to Kindle in-hand and then make a decision within the 30 day period. But returning non-Kindle tablet purchases via Amazon would mean you would have to pay shipping charges.
