There are a lot of former pit traders who now do all their trading online, some even using the MACD. Why? Because they can - because it's expensive to be in the pit, because bid / ask spreads have all but disappeared thanks to electronic trading, and ultimately because it's more profitable. Back when Gerald Appel was calculating his MACD by hand, it wouldn't have been too useful to a pit trader. Times have changed. And... that's no joke.
