Hey everyone,

I'm using a NT demo account to sim trade and do market replay, and I'm unable to add the Nymex heating oil contract. I have a live data feed from CQG as part of the demo, and according to the rather murky help I've been getting from the NT support forum I should be able to get the contract info. I'm pretty new to NT, but from what I can gather I'm supposed to create a new instrument and then fill in the appropriate blanks to receive the data, but I am not getting anywhere with it, and the "copy and paste" answers I'm getting from the admin there are not helping.

Does anyone here trade HO or know how I can add it to my NT instrument list? Either live data or historical data would work (I've connected to the Kinetick EOD feed to try to pull historic info but it's the same problem -- NT can't find the data for the instrument/doesn't recognize the contract).

Thanks!

Unable to add Heating Oil (HO) contract? - NinjaTrader Support Forum

I have seen all the necessary explanations to add heating oil to NinjaTrader. If you just tell us that it does not work, we cannot help you.

Which name did you select for the MasterInstrument?
Did you add the symbol QHO for Kinetick and HOE for CQG as asked for in the thread?
Did you enter the contract specs - you will find them on the website where heating oil is traded?
Did you create the single months contracts to load them?

I have setup HO for Kinetick and Interactive Brokers without any problems.

Did you try anything, do you get error messages?
Can you provide us with a screenshot?

Hi Fat Tails,

Thank you for the reply, I believe I have it sorted out now. The problem is that the instrument is not activated on the broker's side, I guess NYMEX HO is not a contract that normally comes activated with the demo NT platform. I need to contact the broker and have them activate it before I can receive the data feed. This is a demo account from AMP so I can't currently do that, but I'm in the process of funding an account with Howard Lender at DDT, and he assured me this will be no problem. The other half of the problem is that NT doesn't come with that contract standard, it has HO financial futures (BH), and the IPE exchange HO contract (UHO). Apparently you have to go into the UHO contract, which has the right specifications, and change the symbol for your relevant data feed and change the exchange to NYMEX, then it should work. So you need both the activated data feed and to tinker with the instrument settings, both of which easily confuse a novice like myself, hence the repeated requests from people as to why they can't download RBOB and HO data from the NYMEX.

Anyway thank you for the help and I will let you know if I have any further issues.

I have discussed with NinjaTrader support a few times to set up the correct heating oil contract, but if you talk to them about setting up the right instruments, contracts and rollover dates, they are a little deaf. On the other side, if you look at MultiCharts, they do not have preset any of the current contracts for my broker (Interactive Brokers), so I had to create them all from scratch.

So it is not a big problem, it is a one-time-only little annoyance, as you just need to set it up.

Just go to the CME group website, write down the specs and create a new instrument HO by simply copying the sepcs from the website. Create the monthly contract that you require and make sure that you enter the correct rollover dates, if you want to use backadjusted data.
