1) the one like this one - holiday Thursday - Friday normal
2) the holiday on Friday or Monday to prolong the weekend
My experience: On weeks with 1) there is a lot of volume - trading on every day (except holiday) brings $$$
on weeks with 2) the volume is going back - so NO trade BEFORE the holiday
..just to deepen the theme: I am using that rule for the german DAX future
as I know that in abscence of US trading - the same applies for the Dax.
This helped me a LOT to not jump into shallow water.
Plus it was great to get some free days more within a generally heavy
trading year.

On top of that, I have also found that during these periods, support and resistance levels; moving averages, etc... work very accurately, and we rarely overshoot them.
Moreover, the general bias should be towards going long rather than shorting if you are to attempt intra-day plays nonetheless: As they say, it is difficult to short a dull market!
I usually open a very small position to the long side off good support, and let it run for several days throughout the holiday duration and hangover (pre/post...).
Successful people will do what unsuccessful people won't or can't do!
