My first language is Spanish, I speak fluent Portuguese and the English with some difficulty.
MIke you will learn the Spanish more easily, making friends and frequent meetings in Ecuador. It will also help you hire a bilingual assistant. For me it worked very well.
I will hire a caretaker to cook, clean etc -- but I think the chances that person will be bilingual are extremely slim These positions are popular in Ecuador. Hopefully they will be patient enough for me to practice my broken Spanish on them and I can learn from them since they will live on the back of my property.
Best thing is for @Gary to retire at same time, since his Spanish is already pretty good. He can be my assistant
There are lots of places to learn Spanish once I arrive in Ecuador. I am trying to get a jump start though, between now and when I move, which is approx 6 months. So that is why I purchased Fluenz.
Once I get down there I am sure I can find classes that would be good.
When I had to live in a country that does not speak the language, I studied in academies, but, with 51 years old, turned more practical I do what I'm sugiriendo.
Mi daughter speaks 4 languages and is fluent in all, but she has the Flexible brain, which I no longer I have. Not that old are you.
Lol.
