I've got a 15/1 Mbps (1.875/0.25 MBps) plan from TWC. It's a residential cable plan (aka reliable like a lame racehorse horse on tranquilizers) and clocks in at ~$50 once they are done jerking you around on price. I've been thinking about upgrading to get extra megabit of upload to help my internal TOR relay and try to renegotiate the price for a few months at least.
I don't like speed tests because TWC has several tricks to skew them like that "speed boost" crap they were pushing hard. It boosts the speed on the first 10MB of a download and I can't think of one reason outside of skewing speed tests to want that. If they cared about speeding up browsing they would work on the not-so-infrequent latency issues. Grumble grumble grumble...
I grabbed the offical torrent for Black Mesa and my router shows a maximum of 2118.01 KBps down and 80KBps up. The download is my usual saturation point for 10pm on a Saturday. I couldn't really saturate with uploading because A. Black Mesa is well seeded B. I don't want to slow down or have to shut down my relay. Sorry, but my up speed should max at ~125KBps on a day like today.
I'd drop TWC in a heartbeat if I had better options in my area. IIRC Cox has limited service in areas near me just not where I am. I do know that something is going to change if they crap out for a half hour at 1:30pm again.
I pay +/- 100 US$ (70 €) per month cable, it is a bundle :
- digital television+radio
- 100 Mbps unlimited internet
- nearly unlimited (3000 minutes) phone to EU and USA (peak and low) to land lines
- a very handy app on iPhone that allows to make free VOIP calls on the land line to fixed lines EU + USA
I have a backup VDSL 2 line:
- 10 Mbps for 35 € (45$), but i am too far from the hub to enjoy 50+Mpbs on that line
I pay $65 a month for 50/10Mbps via Comcast. There changing plans around out here and somehow I'm receiving whats posted below now. Knowing Comcast it will not last long. I also have Verizon 4G Home Service tied into my router for when Comcast goes down(Once a month). That averages 20/10Mbps and is $50 a month.
Your best bet is to buy your own modem (Under $100) it prevents them for even being able to do that. Along with the fact you start saving the $10 rental fee you pay a month.
It is. But I live in Ecuador, and thus my workstation is here, so I need a reliable and "speedy" connection for basic things just to do RDP, webinars, not to mention netflix.
