I use Waze personally on Android. It's easily the best, much better than any static map. It's online and dynamic, adjusting to traffic in real-time. It's also free.
I will also mention it works fine off-line, just download the area/map you are driving when you are at home on WiFi and then it will work fine offline.
I do have several hand held GPSs for mountaineering and backpacking with roads and geological maps that connect directly to satellites. They are great but all have small screens and not easy to read for driving.
However, my androids require online connection for GPS navigation. Unless, there is an Android device capable to access satellites directly using an app or software.
How does Android with Waze installed navigate in remote areas where there is no online connection. I assume you would use it just like a static map?
Browse the area on-line and it stores/caches the map for off-line use. It will give you routing directions etc. But, none of the social aspects (real-time traffic) will work off-line naturally.
There are also some other good Android off-line map apps. I can't recall their names, but you can google search for them. I tried a few when I first moved to Ecuador because I didn't have (affordable) cell data at the time and needed help getting around. Now I switched to Waze because it's better and the data usage is very minimal (5 meg a month maybe).
