You can try a USB graphic card ( EVGA | USB Devices | EVGA UV Plus+ for example).
AFAIK the display quality is not as good as from a real card, but it's not very expensive and can do the job.

Displaylink display ca handle up to 6 monitors I believe, so if you have a laptop with multiple usb ports, you could run a bunch of Lenovo - Monitors - ThinkVision - LT1421 14 Inch Wide Travel Monitor (US)

I have one of these screens and love it. USB powered and a hard carrying case cover. Travels well, and you could easily fit a laptop and 4 of these in a backpack.

Lenovo T430 or W530 in combination with a docking station support multiple monitors. The T430 also includes Thunderbolt (even though its not in the description) which means you could use an external PCI chassis with a multiple display capable GPU.

Thanks Guys many thnx. Did not know of so many options.

Hi Xav1029 - LT1421 is very interesting. Seems it has 8ms response. Have you found it ok. I Do a lot of charting on tradestation...& will be good to know if you do see much delay.

Hi sam028 - UV Plus.....do you use it. Think I could power 4 monitors.

Hi MyYou - yes am also thinking in terms of W530

I have 2 monitors attached and can see the laptop screen as well
if i want to. I only use the 2 external monitors.

@paps I have found the LT1421 good enough for charting. 8ms is faster than I can click an order I wouldn't watch movies on it, but the portability and low power consumption is superb. You could literally set up a workstation anywhere.

I realize this thread is fairly old, but I just came across the following a couple days ago and I just want to spread the word. I, too, have searched high and low for a solution which offered me a multi-monitor setup on my laptop:

I wanted to share this new product that's going to be launched on Kickstarter.com on Oct. 7th, 2014.

packedpixels.com

I have not seen anything like this on the market. I have a 17" laptop and felt that I still needed more portable screen real estate. A lot of traders work with desktops, so this may not be an issue for them. However, to be able to carry around these screens in your laptop bag and have a whole wrap-around portable setup is godsend!

This looks like it will work with both Windows and MAC OS, so it is cross-platform compatible. The screens are the same ones used on the iPad based on what I am reading, so the resolution is amazing.

Finally, I am not affiliated with this vendor in any way, but I want their Kickstarter to be successful because this product will actually be taken from concept to production and then we can all have one (or two). If they don't meet their goal, then this just won't happen! So, join in and buy into this Kickstarter. This is the perfect product for portable traders!
