I'd like to make it clear, this is just a discussion -- it is not something I am planning on implementing right now. I just want to hear from everyone.
What would happen if futures.io (formerly BMT) were to switch to a 100% pay model. No more free rides.
One possible implementation would be to prevent non-Elite from posting. This would solve virtually all the spam problems and rude posts that I have to spend a lot of time on every day. In this scenario, non-Elite would still be able to read non-Elite content, but they would no longer be able to ask any questions or make any posts anywhere on the forum.
The other possible implementation would be to prevent non-Elite from seeing the content entirely, making everything on futures.io (formerly BMT) Elite only.
Thoughts?
And again, just for discussion sake --- no decisions have been made, no changes are planned.
What would the difference then be between a 'Non Elite' who cannot post but can read and those people who currently view the site as a 'Guest'?
In other words there would be no point in a potential member joining unless they saw the benfits of being Elite, they may as well just stay as a Guest.
Correct, in that circumstance if non-Elite content is allowed to remain visible, it would mean there is no need for anyone to sign up unless they became an Elite Member.
Well what I am thinking is: I started a non elite journal first. Through that posting and experience did I start to see the value of futures.io (formerly BMT) and decided to become an elite. Without that non elite journal I might not have stuck around.
So under the first scenario, all of the same non-Elite content you had access to before would still remain visible to guests. But you wouldn't be able to create your own journal.
So the question is, what influenced your decision more? The creation of the journal, or the community that existed prior to you contributing to it?
Was the act of contribution (by way of posting) a deciding factor?
For one thing, there are some non-Elite posters who post quite a lot (although not many.) They would lose their posting privileges, which they have had since they joined. Some of their posts are good. Many are less so.
So any change would either:
1. Involve grandfathering existing non-Elite members, or
2. Pretty much cutting them off, in terms of posting. This is whether you decide on the read-only or the no-read-at-all choice.
Another thought: I read a lot of posts, in Elite and non-Elite (you do too ). My opinion is that most of the non-Elite members are very casual, and sort of transitory (not all, of course). But then, non-Elite membership is often a transitional state between either becoming an Elite member, or just dropping away. There does need to be a way that someone can get a taste of futures.io (formerly BMT) before deciding to join or to depart. Therefore, I think they need a way to sample some of what is here. I would not have joined (and certainly not have paid any money) without reading a lot of stuff that I thought was valuable first.
I'm no longer clear about what a "Guest" can do, and what a "Non-Elite Member" can do; it's been a while. Can you make clear what their different levels let them each do?
I do understand the spam problem, and it would cut down on some of the lightweight posts, too. It would be good to get that all under control.
Bob.
Edit: also, if the non-Elite types cannot post, there soon will be no non-Elite content for them to read, under the read-only option, unless they get to read the Elite material also, which I don't think is the idea....
The act of contributing and seeing the response from others was really the determining factor. Once I started posting and talking with other users did I really start to see the value of the site. And overtime the draw of what was on the elite side become too much to bear. I figured if the free stuff was this good, then the elite must be amazing... And to be honest at first it was a bit underwhelming. But as I have digested through the site there are plenty of nuggets that make it a no brainer to be elite.
The otherside is again the brotherhood type of mentality. Becoming an elite introduced me to other users that I have found very valuable. Panda, Roy, Itchy, wldman, tiger, bobwest and plenty more...
Thanks Bob. As it exists today, guests cannot view post attachments/images. They can see post content. This is for non-Elite content only. When a member joins (non-Elite, still) they can view attachments/images, and can now also post (non-Elite sections only).
