Basically, it is not the activity (volume) that slows down when a support or resistance level is reached, but momentum.

To detect a slowdown in momentum you can look for chart pattern such as ascending or descending triangles, but you can also watch out for regular divergences.

For detecting divergences typically momentum oscillators are used.

A divergence detects nothing else than the slow down of momentum.

Dave, if I see declining momentum where I expect a trend to end, I think it adds to the probability of a reversal.
I expect to see a small shrinking stairs or wedge pattern at the same time.
But just as often, momentum will peak at the end. I place more weight on the momentum that accompanies the move away from the S/R area.

I use time aggregated bars and volume to take a read. The close over close range is the analog of velocity and volume is mass.
