"Thanks" is polite, fosters community, implies gratitude, and implicitly likes a post.
"Like" is self serving. One cannot express thanks with like.
I have always thought the "Thanks" button as one of the distinguishing features of futures.io (formerly BMT) that separate it from other forums. It is a catalyst for posting and sets an inviting tone.
Thinking about this after reading it again, I think I agree. Not a big point, but when you say "Thanks," it is more personal. So, for what it's worth, put me in the Thanks column.
I agree Bob... it is more personal. That could be the reason why most people don't click the Thanks button. There are a ton of posts I would click the Like button for but far fewer that I would thank someone for.
I guess that I can see how "Like" may mean that you "like" something less than "Thanks," in a way.
I guess it's hard to know how different people will take the same thing, so there may be no real best answer. I do think that most people would not use "Like," just as most do not use "Thanks," either. Or post, for that matter.
I'll still vote in favor of Thanks, but I'll be doing the same number of Likes as Thanks, if that's how it ends up.
Thanks (no joke) for a different way to look at it.
This is the issue, trying to find a balance between encouraging participation and the meaning of giving thanks vs liking something.
The one fact that is indisputable is this: the more people receive positive feedback, be it thanks or likes, the more they continue to participate -- which is good for everyone. Whereas on the other end, someone that receives no feedback (no thanks, no likes) feels like no one is reading --- even though hundreds likely are.
If you are truly looking to replace "thanks" and "like" consider a term like "helped" as in, "It helped me"
This would make the participant think twice whether this post has helped them or not.
