One approach is this:

def todayclose = close(period = AggregationPeriod.DAY);
input span = 12;
plot todaycloseAVG = average(todayclose,span);
You can then modify your MA length by right-clicking on its plot on your charting screen and choose EDIT. Does this help?
Oh, before you ask, if you want more than one Daily MA, use this:

def todayclose = close(period = AggregationPeriod.DAY);
input span1 = 12;
input span2 = 5;
plot todaycloseAVG = average(todayclose,span1);
plot todaycloseAVG2 = average(todayclose,span2);
etc, etc, for each add'l avg adding a number to span and todaycloseavg to identify them (or giving each a new name) so you can find them on the chart's edit panel. AND, getting a little fancier, you might want to be able to set the PRICE you're using (HLC avg, or HIGH, etc) directly from chart edit panel:

input displace = 0;
input length = 21;
input period = AggregationPeriod.FIFTEEN_MIN;
input averageType = AverageType.Simple;

plot MA = MovingAverage(averageType, close(period = period) [-displace], length = length);
