So I'm just starting to look into futures. What factors helped you choose what futures you wanted to trade? I know it bears down to capital and volatility but what are some other things?

Thanks,

Newbie

Among others you have :
- You have fast markets (Crude : CL) and slow markets (ZB/ZN bonds) and anything in between.
- You have liquid markets (S&P 500 : ES) and less liquid markets (6N : kiwi dollar) and anything in between
- You have the sessions (active times) which might be convenient or less convenient depending on your timezone.

I am currently in Japan but I'll be on the west coast soon. Where can you find what time futures are active?

You can find it on CME

Trading Hours: Futures & Options

You will also need to spend a bit time behind the screen and watch and learn...
Each trader has his style/instrument/preferences
