Does it make sense that if im trading the ES market and wanted to see where monthly volume was for months in the past that looking at the spy volume for that month might be more accurate way to gauge what prices the volumes came in at?

No not to me. "Maybe" as some sort of a reference but not really as something to base ES decisions on. Why not just look at ES monthly volume?
