Looking to take an elongated trip with the family but still would like to trade in the mornings. Do not want to bring my desktop and computer monitors with me. I can get most of what I need on my laptop, and maybe one additional small monitor. I had heard of renting computer time on virtual computers, so all my computer would have to do it link via wifi to run my "computer" remotely. Has anyone had experience with virtual computers? I would link remotely to my home computer, but we often lose power, and would be out until I return to reboot my computer.
Any suggestions of what others have done on extended trips?

Regarding travelling my move to Colombia started as an extended trip. I have 3x Asus 168B+ 1080p single USB powered & data cable, worked on USB 2 perfectly. I love them.
Regarding virtual severs, you could go Amazon cloud or maybe with our own Sam028 (runs speedytradingservers.com ) who is a real gent.
If your in places like South America, typical Wifi is domestic style with no paywalls/firewalls so no issue getting out but often 3-5 Meg (I have had 20 in some hotels) and this can make screen re-drawing slow (and way two slow to run two screens). If you lose data, your blind to your VPS. 3 or 4g backup (phone/dongel) can be a life saver.
Bandwidth/experience wise IMO your better off running the client locally (assuming discretionary), 3Mb is ok for 1-2 instrument data streams. Remoting seems more bandwidth hungry. If you trade with server side targets & stops its do-able.
A lot depends on what kind of trader you are. For a swing trader both are fine generally. If you use bots, running them off a VPS is most sensible.
The speedytradingservers.com was just what I was looking for. I may even try getting an iPad Pro or Microsoft Surface 4 to trade with. Looks like both would be compatible with this. The total resolution on both of those is nearly equivalent to two monitors. My trading does not require speed. I appreciate the information.

Tablets are fine but less easy to use for remote desktop than a laptop, unless you have very small fingers .
I use a 5.5" Android smartphone from time to time but mainly to check if things are working as expected, I won't debug a Ninja strategy from there.
@Rory, remoting is not bandwidth hungry but more sensitive to very high latency. If market data is coming in your local PC with a 500 ms delay you won't see it, with a remote desktop things will look sluggish.
From what I saw the countries where remoting for discretionary trading was really to sluggish was Vietnam and continental China (thanks to the Great Firewall), but usable from New-Zealand for example.
Indeed, I was putting it poorly as its all relative to what you do/location so suck and see is often required.
In 2014 I typically traded ES on a 610 tick with a 233tick covering 1/4 of the right side for example from Europe on a high resolution display. The screen bitmap updates were a little lagging in fast markets. However if trading 1 minute+ certainly fine. Maybe Windows 10 RDC is more efficient now also.
I'm sure with two years experience I could easily ignore any lag, as a beginner in 2014 I was too conscious and fussy about things being perfect.
Anyway, its not expensive so it makes sense to have both local and VPS. One or the other should work.
I have a Surface Pro 4 with the attached keyboard.
I find it is perfect for trading but I am used to using a laptop for trading.
It is of similar size as my previous laptop (Sony Vaio) but faster.
Surface Pro 4 had some issues (hardware / software) but I've resolved most of them with regedit or updates.
My office has a very fast connection so I can use remote control software to trade from my desktop from my Surface but usually I don't need the speed to trade my system. The only time I do that is when I use a system that is more than a scalper and I don't want to risk a disconnect. (multiple internet connections at my office)
Yes I do get some slippage when mobile trading by not having the fastest connection but that is only during fast movements of the market which I tend to avoid.
I've heard speedytradingservers.com is a great service. Several of my trading friends have used them.

I have a Surface Book (i7, 16GB ram and 512GB SSD) and i don't recommend it. It has some serious issues and Microsoft is very slow in providing adequate support. At the moment it stays completely off and I am unable to switch it on. Maybe I have a chance in two/three days (already happend to me once).
My travel rig is normally a Lenovo/HP Laptop (T-Series with Lenovo and Pro/Elitebook with HP) with a ~14" screen and two Asus 168B+ 1080p USB3 monitors (they are great!).
I try to have a second fallback connection (eg. UMTS/LTE modem or router with a local simcard). Sometimes I travel with a small pfsense-router with a failover setup on the WAN-side. But thats only necessary when I'm traveling with more than one PC.
If you are traveling often, I would recommend a VPS or dedicated server in a datacenter.
Lots of people had this issue.
If you have one of the early builds of the SP4 then return it to MSFT.
If it is later, you may not be getting the latest updates and system flashes.
Check your update history for failed updates and do them manually.
If it won't start, press and HOLD the power button and see if it will. IF that does not work then press and hold the power button and the Vol Up until it starts into the bios and then restart. Most of the time, that is because of failed updates. Once those are done, the system runs fine.

My Surface Book is uptodate, latest (firmware-) updates, from 07/14, are already installed.It's a shame, it really is.
I already talked twice with the Microsoft "Answer" Desk, but they suggested I should send it back to the seller (amazon), because they would send me only a refurbished unit back (and mine has only ONE battery charge cycle).
The support here in Europe isn't good for the Surface-family. I have tried all the reset/reboot-combinations without success. They only work, when the system is responding.
The strange thing is, that after some days, the Surface Book works again. I have no clue (nor does Microsoft).
After the next successful start, I will reset the unit back to factory default and reapply the updates. If the problem still exists, I will return the unit to amazon.
