I'm assuming this monitor would satisfy the purist among you who belittled my idea of using an HDTV for a monitor?

Actually I'm grateful for the feedback and information.

UltraSharp U2711 27 inch Monitor with PremierColor Details

Would this require a special video card?

2560 x 1440 for a 27", that's really very good.
I have a 26" with only 1920x1200, and I think 26" is a bit too much for this resolution, 24" is enough for 1920x1200.

With this 27", it seems you'll have the good resolution/size ratio.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo .. less than a grand now ... oo .. its U$ .. ok

The monitor would satisfy me ... lol .. I suggest getting a video card with display port ..it will cost about same as the monitor ... or you can use a cheaper card but it may not be the best match.

I have used 1920x1200 27" & 24" side by side for awhile ... I do think I would prefer something in the middle ...

This Dell might be a new sweetest spot !! Pivot 2x21" on each side @ 1440x900 and bask in 180degree panorama of rays !

Trader.Jon I never heard of a display port card especially one for the cost of this monitor but I read up on em and they sound like the future.

I'm hoping a cheap dual-link DVI card like this one could support the full resolution (I'm just making a wish list anyway):

We love our screens!

I just got a new Dell system with a 21.5 inch screen. Not as big
as what some use, but far far better than what I had. There's always
something bigger though.

Here is another one from Dell. I don't know if it's their biggest or not:
