While the UK and much of the world struggles with overcrowded prisons, the Netherlands has the opposite problem. It is actually short of people to lock up. In the past few years 19 prisons have closed down and more are slated for closure next year. How has this happened - and why do some people think it's a problem?

A very interesting article on rehabilitating prisoners. I think more nations should follow the Netherlands' example.

I don't consider the empty prisons a succes.
More and more criminals are sentenced to a community service of a couple of hundreds hours, instead of being locked up. For many young small criminals with no job, no education and nothing to do all day a community service is not a penalty. Instead, it gives them something to do and socialize with other criminals.
Crime rates in bigger cities are increasing and it all starts with small crimes that are -in my observation- not punished harsh enough.

So... fill 'em!
