It seems that the ES, CL, and GC get the lion's share of the attention in the futures trading community. I'm curious as to why more people don't trade the ZB for instance?
More specifically, if you are an experience trader.. why don't you trade the ZB? Have you traded it in the past and found a reason not to? Or is there a reason you haven't tried?
While ZB and ZN are not my primary trading instruments, I frequently take trades in both markets. Most of the traders that I know personally do likewise. Every market has unique characteristics and for ZB those include excellent liquidity, generally lower commissions (depending on your broker and what you're comparing against), relatively low volatility, and $32.50 per tick bang for your buck. Also, ZB is often used as a potential hedge against ES positions. Good luck.
As for the reason why they may be not as popular, I may hazard a guess: they move more slowly and perhaps most people tend to get bored. Again just a guess.
ZB is all I trade , usually from 7am to 10 or 11am , quite often done in only an hr. of trading . It does move more slowly at times which is why I like it . You can quite often catch a reversal around 11 or 12 if things don't work out earlier . I am retired so trading is just a hobby for me , so that can make a difference in my selection of mkt. I suppose . I think one should really get the feel of a mkt. they choose and not bounce around to much . I only go for 3 or 4 ticks each day so zb has a good bang for the buck as already stated . Good Luck trading and everyone have a great holiday season .
In my opinion the bonds aren't as forgiving. Other instruments will string you along for a while. They like the attention, and let you believe you're such a good trader. It's not until your ego is fully invested that they'll blow out your account. Bonds on the other hand have no time for such games. They're the most popular instruments on the exchange, and so they aren't afraid to be a bitch to you up front. You know from day one that you have no clue what's going, and they never leave a mistake unpunished.
