100% agree with everything said here. There is enough benefits in NT8 to get you hooked and not want to go back to NT7, but the crashing and graphical quirks are very real for me too. Although NT8 is much faster in many regards, doing a few simple tasks, it is much more sluggish than NT7. The croshair, bringing up indicators properties box and general graphical refreshing to name a few...
Fingers crosesd they are working hard to rectify the issues.
I started with NT7 years ago but jumped over to MultiCharts as writing/backtesting strategies was a lot faster in EasyLanguage. As MC does't have 100% integration with FXCM (I use Oanda with MC now), I thought I'd give NT8 a shot and it seems to work fairly well though I can't seem to find the per trade P/L on any of the "reporting" pages (e.g. "Executions"). MC seems to do a better job on that front unless I'm missing something - one would think that an "obvious" bit of information to include in reports, no?
FWIW, I'm running this on 24-core machines with 48GB RAM so no performance issues thus far...
Some guys may be using Interactive Brokers data feed. That is an additional source of your problems.
I run 2 charts and my well-tuned 6 core 16GB machine gets quirky. Try using the IB Gateway and not run TWS which will demand every available resource. Additionally, you may get a dedicated feed for some $$.
It should be, but i haven't tested it in NT8 (NT7 had a limitation of X time speed
where N8 is supposed to use all the power available and in multi-threaded way..
I have passed the stage of endless back-testing ;-)
i mostly test forward now
Fair enough and thanks. I don't know whether you'd call what I define as deliberate practice as backtesting but I think I know where you're coming from.
The reason I asked the question was that I tried Market Replay in NT8 but I could not appreciate any difference with NT7's, apart from the speed which as I recall goes up to 1000x and I think "Max", but that's it.
So I thought my relatively little experience with Market Replay may not account for other differences that I don't see.
What hardware do you have ?
can you test it again and look at the load on your cores ? (there are a few free tools around, that let you visualize that), in the past NT 7 would be at max speed and your machine (if it's a big one), would be at 15% load, means i can produce faster results if well programmed with that hardware. if NT 8 is to the promise, you should see a lot more load on your machine, possible that 1000x times, is the peak of your hardware ?
of course there are other bottlenecks, do you have an SSD ? if not the HD can be the bottleneck
with performance monitor, you could see if there is a CPU resource that is peaked out
or if NT8 does not use all the power available.. this would then be an architecture issue
where a bottle neck is created in the software
