I have imported a couple of strategies that were converted from NT7 to NT8. I am quite new to NinjaTrader though I have an extensive programming background. So, I have no real trouble with the coding aspects.

My question is this. When import a strategy that includes indicators that already exist, will it make a difference if I choose to keep my existing indicator and not overwrite it with the one included?

I've looked at the code and the only difference I've noticed is more about preference than anything else. I was wondering if I just added a naming convention, such as @EMA_st1, @EMA_st2...., for example, that would allow me to have multiple like indicators with various 'presets', would be a viable solution.

Any input about this will be welcome.

If you talk about genuine NT indicators (@SMA, @EMA, @MacD, ...) no need to overwrite them, but if you overwrite them it's not a big deal as they are identical.
If it's updated custom indicators then you may want to keep traces of older versions, but it's up to you.

If the indicators are not built-in indicators, sometimes the creator of the code / strategy will tweak the indicators with custom settings or booleans and will not work without over-writing.

The safest thing to do is to not over-write and see if the strategy still works as expected.
If the strategy does not work, make a backup of the indicators used and then import again.

I usually do frequent backups of my indicator folder just incase I over-write one that has a flaw.
(backups never hurt)

Thanks for the input. I really appreciate it. I have already backed-up my NT folders, since reading this.
