One of my hesitations about Bitcoin is exactly this. When you buy on an exchange, unless you withdraw the coins, the exchange has the coins not you, which exposes you to so many risks. An interesting point made in the CME Bitcoin thread was that an the futures contracts will allow you to buy Bitcoins, move them to cold storage, and then use the futures to hedge/trade them without having to remove them from cold storage.
I hate that I mentioned BTC hacking just a couple of days ago and this just happened but, as pointed out, it's kind of inevitable, especially given the value BTC is up to.
