Currently, I want to add a down arrow after a condition. I want to avoid having multiple down arrows in a row, and I want use a variable to store whether the last arrow was up or down, but I don't know how I can change this variable and refer to it later on.

This should help get you started. Pots a down arrow on the most recent of either of two different condition and displays in a label which of the two conditions that is.

Code
def upCondition = Average(close, 10) crosses above Average(close, 20);
def downCondition = Average(close, 10) crosses below Average(close, 20);
def whichCondition = if upCondition then 1 else
                   if downCondition then 0 else
                      whichCondition[1];

plot
ConditionBar = BarNumber() == HighestAll(if whichCondition != whichCondition[1] then
                                           BarNumber() else Double.NaN);
ConditionBar.SetPaintingStrategy(PaintingStrategy.BooLEAN_ARROW_DOWN);

AddLabel(whichCondition, " Up Condition ", Color.UpTick);
AddLabel(!whichCondition, " Down Condition ", Color.DownTick);
