I have 16 GB of RAM and the programs never hit that ceiling. It happens at various points, usually when launching a workspace or adding an indicator or strategy. Nothing exotic, mind you. It happened 4 times the other day. The workspace flickers white and I get the dreaded 'TradeStation has experienced a problem and will shut down' message.
I'm actually interested to know what specs others use for there VPC so I just made another thread asking this question. Maybe I am stupid but for me it seems much more expensive to get the same specifications on a VPC compared to VPS specially if you are running the service 24/5.
On Azure im on Standard D4s v3 (4 vcpus, 16 GiB memory), Windows (Windows Server 2019 Datacenter
Costs $200 per month. I also use it for other stuff, but in terms of trading I only use it with RDP for discretionary chart trading. I think of it more like a dedicated 99.99% uptime internet connection. A recall reading on this forum that Big Mike has multiple internet connections for his home as backups, this VM is my version of that. Another benefit is I can trade on any pc, and even on my phone through RDP.
With NT8, I've never had a single crash on this instance, and I never restart it (outside of azure doing some kind up automatic upgrade restart).
I think you could get away with a much cheaper instance too.
Once my new AMP account is funded, I'll be testing Sierra Charts on the VM. But everything I've read so far says Sierra Charts is one of the most light weight platforms, so I don't expect any crashes.
If I were you I'd contact tradestation support for help debugging your frequent crashes. I'm sure there's crash logs with additional info. Probably best to address the crashes directly instead of building hacky work arounds.
I also use MultiCharts (64-bit) and Sierra Charts (analysis only, no trading). Both have performed flawlessly. SC is just awesome when it comes to performance.
I have done the rounds with TS support to no avail (hours and hours and hours). This has been a years long thing and not isolated to one PC. We will move away from TS at some point.
One suggestion with regards to using RDP: you need to make sure your IP with Azure is configured to only allow connections from certain IP addresses, otherwise you leave the VM open to attacks. There are a number of ways to do this, including Azure's VPN. The key is having a dedicated IP, as I understand it. If you use a VPN service (I use NordVPN), you can get a dedicated IP address, in case you hop around the planet like we tend to do. Or just get Azure's. I know once we move our live strategies to Azure, I will be securing it.
