If I had the energy to watch the market and not sleep there would be 20+ setups a day I think, but since I limit my trading to a time when I'm awake, can focus solely on trading, and during a period of volume and volatility that is to my liking, I only have about 2-3 set ups a day. I usually take about 2 a day. Otherwise I know I'm overtrading and chasing. Sometimes I oversleep and get zero set ups.
Since my last post I've started to scalp more. Same setup(s) on the 2hr but on 1 and 5 min /NQ. I'm averaging 5 trades/day. Some days I may take 10-15 others 2-3. Depends on what the market is giving me.
I trade ES, NQ, and CL. I usually only trade 1 instrument on a given day.
I probably have a good 3-4 quality setups per day. Sometimes I take less, sometimes I take more (to my dismay).
It all depends on strategy and how energized I am. I tend to spot better short opportunities before they happen rather than long opportunities. So, if one of these instruments are down, I will focus on that one.
Generally I get 2 really good opportunities to trade per day on my national index. I can increase number of opportunities if I'm willing to reduce number of elements to be in favor but then number of positive trades tends to drop. My system is combination of multiple systems I've developed over the years and tends to work in tandem better than independently.
Opportunity frequency is often, in my experience, a matter of timeframes. The lower you go the more setups there are, they just take more energy to trade and win rates can suffer due to timing, slippage, etc. Lately I've settled into trading the 10m chart using the 5m to time entries and the 15m to time exits. I probably see 2 maybe 3 setups a day on the ES.
