What does the number mean?

When I open Futures IO I get a ribbon that shows New Posts (530)

What does the number represent? It's certainly not the number of new posts since my last visit and I'm pretty sure it's not the number for the last 24 hrs.

Is it possibly the number I haven't read?

Yes, unless you keep clearing the backlog of posts you haven't read with "Mark all forums read" they will keep showing up as unread.
