After you post has been posted you can click the Edit button in the bottom right corner of the post. Once your're in edit mode you can edit and save the changes or you can click on the delete button (both in the bottom right corner).
On occasion, if requested, we may delete someone's post if they really don't want it to stand. We tend to do it when asked, because there's no reason for someone to be embarrassed by something they may have said hastily and we want the forum experience to be a positive one.
Why isn't it something that is automatically available then? Because it's also important to have a record of what people have posted that others can rely on, and that doesn't just change around if someone finds it inconvenient to have said it. If someone who is being disagreed with can alter or delete their post and then just say, "Oh no, I didn't say that, you are misstating me," then everyone needs to be able to see what they actually did say, and not a cleaned-up or altered version of it that is meant to escape criticism, or a complete deletion of the point.
The general idea is that if you say something, you can stick by it, or you can say you were mistaken and restate it in a new post. But what you said is what you said. There is a 24-hour period to correct things if you have typo's or if you really realize you didn't want to say it the way you did, but there comes a time when you should either be willing to stand up for what you said, or say you were mistaken and restate it.
In general, keeping an original record of what someone said on the forum is worth something, and our default is generally in favor of keeping that record intact.
On the other hand, if someone has just said something hastily that they regret (as people do, and as I have), then we are open to simply taking it off the forum if no harm is done by doing so. We don't get many requests for this, and we do tend to honor them, depending on the situation.
My point in going into all this is that there is a reason for this policy, and we also recognize exceptions and try to be reasonable.

I believe that the person who starts a thread should have ownership of their comments within that thread. However, if they post in another thread, the platform can apply its 24-hour rules for editing or deleting those comments. I believe this approach would encourage greater engagement from users.
