Was reminded tonight the only thing I love more than space science (and now space technology & engineering after the last Mars landing) and the hope of inhabiting other planets and eventually other galaxies, is particle physics. Tonight my son was instructing me on the fine art of wine tasting home made wine (more of a wine guzzler myself) when he mentioned how he monitors the vacuum on a carboy during degassing. Specifically he mentioned "mm/mg" which reminded me of decades spent not having the guts to buy a purpose built vacuum pump & gauge I needed to build my first accelerator (a cyclotron), a passion of mine since I was 5 years old and my dad taught me how to use a HAM radio (for the excitation potential, I imagined). I've probably read every Scientific American Amateur Scientist experiment with low atmosphere physics ever written since then. The Cern colllider is on my bucket list, along with a decent telescope, and living under a decent sky. And getting an email from one of the moons of Jupiter.
