I'm not sure if you're giving advice as to what I should tell someone that is trying to bring me down or if you're suggesting that I'm bringing you down. Who knows, perhaps you're suggesting what I should have said to you in response instead of what I wrote. I could take that so many ways Gary, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt lol
Is communication even necessary?

Yes, to function in relationships, work, the grocery store... No in trading.
But, to become a Trader, communicating truthfully with yourself, even if that requires communicating with the world, is needed. Something to do with breaking out of what the majority thinks, while being in full view.
If it makes you feel any better I feel bit malcontent and like a prick myself. Sadly, sometimes I even feel the need to be a little prickish to even communicate with some people. I don't know how someone could respectfully tell you those things, or maybe that's their way of trying to piss you off more. Either way, training someone how to trade is not a guarantee of their success and the minute they don't understand that is time to drop them. Helping them learn how to stop making mistakes is different if they choose to accept fault. But in the end most people will end up doing it their way, make all the mistakes you told them to avoid, and then come back and ask you what they did wrong. Thankfully life goes on and the markets don't stop either.

I second that...and I'd like to add three more possible responses to that.
1) How much money did you loose so far ?
2) That's not a reasonable / sound / decent / rational JOB (please choose one).
3) How can you make a living from that (such a dangerous GAME) ?

I just say I am a Somalian pirate, and they stop asking questions altogether, backing away to a safe distance.
Everyone who knows will ask, "How is the trading going?" I just say "very good". or they ask, "So how is the market?" I say, "I really don't know, that part does not matter". I keep the discussion to a minimum. It is "work", and not really something to talk about.
Talking with the father of a friend of mine recently, he asked me what I did. I told him I was a daytrader. He just looked at the ground and shook his head.
I said, "Do you watch sports?" He said yes. I asked him if being a professional athlete was a "real job", and then not waiting for his reply added, "Do you know how many kids play football versus how many make it into the NFL? The odds are about the same as me being a daytrader. But a few do make it. I am one of them".
Yeah, I know what you mean....and comparing trading (as a JOB) with professional athletes meets it pretty well.
Maybe it might be a good idea to invite all sceptics to attend a trading session...and I'd wear a $3k tailor-made suit while sitting in front of my screens if necessary and if this would help to give this JOB a really serious character...
Well, right after the Lehman collapse in Europe any Investment banker's social status was considered below the social status of a prostitute...but nowadays I could just have driven a Million $$$ hedge fund against the wall and would be considered as 'honorable' though...
