Haven't logged-in here for a few weeks... A 3 month old baby is reason for that.
Mike, I really, really like this monitor. Please understand that I'm not sitting in front of them like most folks here, for hours upon hours though. I'm lucky to squeeze-in 3 hours of futures paper trading a week. I'm a little disgusted at this reality, but there are just other more pressing priorities at the time. I use this set-up for my stock and option swing trading though... I never had this much resolution before and simply love it. I have four in use now and I don't think I'll have a need for more... I have them in portrait mode and with that, I find that there is no need for a monitor bracket, support system. The only negative, and it's minor, is that when they are in portrait mode, they only can do so with the USB ports at the top. If one needed to use those, it would not be practical and look pretty bad too. I put some tape over them to prevent anything from getting inside... Why they didn't put them on the other side facing down, I don't know.
I didn't get mine new, but refurbished from HP, for a nice discount. I also got a Z200 at the time and I was happy with the additional discounts they extended.
EDIT / ADD: I have no experience with that card. I had never heard of a card that can handle 6 monitors. If the card fails or starts to go bad, all your monitors would be impacted. Personally, I somewhat prefer multiple cards and the redundancy that affords...
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
Can you share the price you paid for them? I am not against buying refurbs. These monitors should last me 5-8 years, the only real risk is if one dies I need to get an exact replacement off ebay to avoid mis-matching with the set of six.
I'll need to do the measurements to see if six in portrait mode would work, or if I need to also buy another stand.
Mike, I just found the invoice stating $320, free shipping. Yes, direct from HP. There's a thread here where someone directed me to HP refurb...
I'm attempting to upload yesterday's offerings (I get this spreadsheet daily) so you can see what's available now. You can also check online as well...
So, it looks like $339. Believe me, call them, and ask what they would sell for if you bought 4 (say that first), get their offer, then say 6... If I got 320, you can probably do better. Well, I got the Z200 also... Give it a shot. They might be wanting to move this stuff and willing to drop their prices even more...
I've been in the IT business for a long time and have always felt that I need provide the computer to my customers that they need for their requirements. Generally and notice I said generally, my customers don't need a medium to high end product. All they need is a basic computer to do general office type tasks. So, my approach is to provide them a cost effective system that they can replace relatively often in order to remain relatively current with technology. I have a couple customers who do a lot of math and graphics intensive stuff that obviously don't fall into the above category.
Even though I trade, I've concluded that philosophy holds true for me as well.
I've been trading now for 6 years and running on computers that I thought I needed. I decided that I overspent and recently bought a laptop that cost $350. Awesome little computer that has 4 GB of memory is so much better than either of my other 2 computers. I figure I can replace it every couple of years without spending the big dollars, do everything I need, and still remain relatively current with technology. Seems to make sense to me unless I'm overlooking something.
I know traders that are very happy trading from a laptop. I'm not one of them I've just got too much stuff open all the time, I need to see lots of things at a glance, not just trading related, so that would never work for me personally.
I may not have mentioned this but i have 3 computers which includes the laptop...the laptop is my trading computer and so i keep it relatively free of junk. I can afford for the other 2 computers to be older, less capable and be used to display my other stuff that I look at. Sorry I failed to mention that. Kind of changes the viewpoint a bit doesn't it. Also, between the 3 computers, I have 5 screens. Now you have the bigger picture. If I were to only have 1 computer, my viewpoint might change a bit. For example, I would spend more money on a video card. However, I can ever imagine that i will only have 1 computer.
A couple of months back I went to Walmart and bought an ACER Aspire 4GB for $395. Used the HDMI connection to hook it up to my HD flatscreen. Now, I don't need reading glasses to see what's on the screen.
