So I was "this close" to pulling the trigger and building a whole new system, Z68, i7 980, 256gb SSD, 32gb memory, six new HP zr24w's, new hd5870 video card, etc.
But then decided it was more of a sideways upgrade over what I have, not a true major upgrade. The new Ivy Bridge LGA2011's are due early next year and should be a huge improvement, so I'll wait to build a new system until then. That makes it 3 years, for sure the longest I've ever gone in over 20 years of building my own systems, between a major upgrade.
So, to tide me over I decided to buy two cheap Asus 22" monitors for $129/ea shipped off Newegg, to give me six 22" monitors in total with matching resolutions. When I'm ready to build a new system I'll sell these six and get the new 24" HP or Dell or whatever is the best IPS panel. I also bought a dual monitor stand (vertical config, not horizontal) from Tyke Supply to go with my existing quad stand, so I can put all six monitors next to each other and align them properly. Here's hoping it all works...
Also to tide me over, I bought a new Crucial M4 256GB SSD drive, a new high end "constant use" office chair, and a new backlit keyboard.
I did my research like always and found it for $165.51 shipped from "The Supply Tree". I just went back to their website so I could link it for you, the price has changed to $300 now. So I guess I got a good deal
While I don't weigh anywhere near 450 lbs I wanted a heavy duty chair that hopefully wouldn't break down like my current one, or start squeaking so much.
"The day I became a winning trader was the day it became boring. Daily losses no longer bother me and daily wins no longer excited me. Took years of pain and busting a few accounts before finally got my mind right. I survived the darkness within and now just chillax and let my black box do the work."
Enjoy the 5870. I find this card though for gaming is quite suitable for trading with multiple screens. Crossfire is not necessary but a 2nd card will add another 6 screens. Well that is mad if somebody attempts that.
Just purchased 4xDell U2412M for $309/ea, they will be here next week. I'll have to gauge everything after I get them setup to see if four is enough in portrait mode, or if I should use my monitor stand(s) to put them in landscape mode on top of each other and get six of them. My desk isn't "huge", so I'll just have to see what comfortably fits.
Main reason I went with the U2412M over the zr24w was the LED backlight, which uses 50% less power and thus generates much less heat. Heat is a real problem for my office, even with no computer in here (it is in the closet next room over) - the monitors put out a lot of heat. So hopefully this will be the better choice. The Dell is also a newer monitor. The reviews pretty much put them equal, and the HP was less expensive at $290 shipped, but I felt the Dell was the way to go.
