I like sandwiches. They have all the ingredients of a balanced meal, that is if you don't load them with meat. I usually ask for my sandwiches heavy on the lettuce and tomato and lighter on the meat. This way you get the carbs from the bread, fiber and nutrients from the veggies and protein from the meat. I use the food pyramid as a reference, I'm not a nutritionist. It doesn't hurt to go to the gym or go for a run every day.

An update - have now lost 30 lbs. Has been about 3 months since I started the thread and my diet. All I have changed is my food intake, making very careful choices at the store on every single item consumed. Also am eating several small meals instead of one large meal a day.
Now that I have moved into this new house, I plan to move forward with the elliptical or some similar machine after my second hand surgery and recuperation time.
Good for you! If you really want to get in shape, I would advise you to give Tabata intervals a try. It is the best way, I believe, to lose fat and still keep muscle mass intact.
