WebSouth and Jeff. They say if there is a ditch, people in Louisiana can make a
meal. Do you know how to tell if your at a Louisiana Zoo? There is a recipe by
the description of the animal your looking at.
I will try the nogap range bars Monday.

The repainting is necessary if you want it to display as a line on the chart. If you don't have the repainting the line will not be continuous around color changes.
If you disable the repainting (you can comment out the repaint lines in the code) and set it to dots or hash, then it's ok.
What I've found in comparing the two is that when you have repainting off, you sometimes get a 1 bar change or colors flipping back and forth: red red red blue red blue blue blue. These aren't visible on Jeff's charts. I prefer not-repainting for one reason: If you go back and look at historical charts and your indicator is repainting, you won't see the same thing you see real time. So if you work on a strategy and then try it in real time you'll get more false alerts.
I like to manually backtest my ideas and setups so I prefer not to have repainting. This means I can't put the LR as a line on panel one. But I prefer it on panel 2 to keep panel 1 clean. It's a personal choice.
Technically this statement is false, you can run two separate data feeds on Ninja on one computer.
The first data feed has priority, so if it can supply the data then it will. The 2nd will be used if the first doesn't have the data. When I'm trading stocks I connect to Zen-fire first and then IB. And I get both. one could also do this to get the TICK index.
I will only say one thing about Viper. A member here asked me about them so I took 30 minutes to search google and find some first-hand experiences of people who tried Viper. What they said was that at the end of the day Viper will pick the best tick/range setting for that day and then highlight how well it worked in a video later on. Thus people watching the video get excited thinking it works when in reality no one can know ahead of time what range setting works best for a given day!
Now if someone says it works for them then that's great I'm happy for them. If someone is trying to decide whether to sign up, I just say search mypivots.com for viper and read the first hand experiences and then make your decision. To each his own.
I have not tried EOTPro but from what I've seen & heard, if I were to join a trading room / lease indicators (which I'm not) I would try EOTPro.
But I agree with Jeff, one can be profitable with the indicators and charts used in this thread (and a few others here). The trick is weed out all the stuff that doesn't work to find out what does.
Playing around with the charts & indicators. Here's what I found:
- eco2 vs. sharkfin
With default settings & sharkfin(2) give almost (99%?) the same results. I was really surprised at this. If I had to pick one or the other, I think the sharkfin is slightly better but that's just my guess
- LR(21) vs. EMA(20)
I think the EMA(20) is more reliable. The LR(21) gives some false signals as seen in my chart. Whereas the EMA doesn't. However the LR turns quicker and can potentially give more trade opportunities at the risk of having some false signals.
I'm wondering if maybe there is a place for both LR & EMA?
- multiple timeframes
Do we really need MTF? The smaller timeframe will signal before the larger one. If we wait for the larger then the entry on the smaller TF is not as good, the stop is farther, which means more risk.
I'm looking forward to trying all this on Monday..
Agreed! -sigh- Jeff you are too kind... I very much respect your intent there.
Zoethecus, as a "Dot developer" I can say I am not filthy rich yet at all. Indicators continue to hinder my trading and yet I keep them on my charts. All I want/need is the "Buy Stupid!" indicator. IMHO, Sharkfin/LinReg on the faster period settings still lags and sometimes gives false signals on the bigger charts too. Think about it... If an indicator gives false signals on a smaller chart it will also do the same on bigger chart right? Maybe, maybe not.
I was looking at my trades today and noticed I had a lot of volume indicators on my chart because I am addicted to volume. Not one indicator signaled an entry into a trade on the first pullback up this morning on 6E. Whenever I review my successful trades I realize that my initial impulse to enter a trade is always from price action yet I always need to wait for my indicators to confirm. Thus many of my trades are late or don't happen at all because I have to wait for confirmation. So because I lack the confidence to enter the trade solely on a price pattern I decide to wait for indi's to tell me when. Indicator setups and chart tweaking will just take more price pattern study time away from me. But what the heck do I know? I have only been at this for a little while.
I don't remember if this has been mentioned before / or if it would be helpful.
You can stack the particle oscillator and the phase shift in the same panel.
Make the lines or items you don't need to see transparent and it gives the best of both indicators in one panel.
(when you use a laptop to trade from, it conserves screen space and gives a cleaner look)
fwiw.
