If you clicked the link you'd see that the trippy filter is just one of 16 filters you can use with the application. I ran my picture through a few times adding layers of distortion, it didn't just come out like that on the first try with one filter. It does take some finesse to get it right and apparently the open source code allows you manipulate the base images involved with the distortions.
