Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
Mike, I like the concept of the Quick Summary and have some suggestions/comments.
Logically, it should always be at the top of the 1st page - the first thing you see, regardless of display mode. Think of it as a "sticky" position within the thread. That might encourage folks to use it more often, even if the original thread creator just blanks it out until he has something to say. Right now, if you set to newest first, the QS is at the bottom of the last page.
It also shows up as a reply -- so now threads that truly have no replies statistically report one. This is a nit, but it is inaccurate. I would suggest that moving the QS above the first post would also provide a way of correcting the stats.
In longer threads, for example, when folks are sharing debugging a function or code, the QS would then provide a sticky place, easily found, that always points to the latest version under test/discussion -- something that would help many forums on the web...
I am a member of elitetrader, traders laboratory and T2W for a longer time than I have been a member of futures.io (formerly BMT). This forum is really different. Thanks to personal involvement of Mike this is more like a community, and response to questions or ideas is much faster compared to the other places. Also I found that is well and actively managed by moderators.
It is a winning concept, so I would not change too much. If there is something to change, it would be to manage its success, that is its growth. There is a risk - and I have seen this quite often, also happened to myself - that a second and a third thread is opened for the same subject and/or question. Information otherwise may become redundant or obsolete. So in the end you will get 200 answers for any key word search and won't be able to find what you are looking for. This is not the case right now.
I think that the role of moderators will be crucial. Transferring posts to threads, where they belong, organizing responses. I appreciate your nomination of SAM, want to try out that SVN project (haven't had the time yet), all sorts of things that foster co-operation.
No, I am impressed with this work. Don't know how it is possible to manage such a forum and trade at the same time....
I appreciate the kind words. I work very hard on the forum, as do the moderators. We are looking for more moderators and I encourage you and others to help us by becoming a moderator if you can. The forum continues to grow very rapidly, and we need additional sets of eyes to take care of the things you mentioned as well as help us make sound decisions on new ideas and tools we are implementing to help traders.
Still, for those not comfortable being moderators, you can help futures.io (formerly BMT) by continuing to be helpful with your posts with each other. That is what futures.io (formerly BMT) is built on -- helping others, which in turn will help yourself. Too many other forums are all about "me me me", everyone for himself, there is no sense of community there. Here on futures.io (formerly BMT) we try very hard to promote the community spirit, and I'm glad you noticed I'm also glad to have you here.
Sorry I didn't see this the first time I replied. Actually you are quite right, I spend less time trading these days and more time managing the forum. It works out well for me in fact. I have become a far better trader in the last year as I have learned much via the forum, and have become a better trader.
It is said that teaching is harder than being a student, and I think this makes my point. By wanting to help others, each time I offer advice or try to answer a question on the forum, or describe why I would trade something or not trade, etc, I am in a bit of a "teacher" role. When in this role, you are much more aware of what you are saying, and you also become keenly aware of a disconnect (if one exists) between what you are saying -- what you know to be true -- and your own actions that may not be aligned.
In the beginning, going back to this past year, I found that I was doing a bunch of what could be described as "do as I say, not as I do". By this I mean that I was giving advice but not following my own advice in my own trading.
That has stopped, and I have the forum to thank for it.
I'm not a perfect trader, but by repeating day in and day out the methods, rules, systems, psychology, trade management, money management --- all of it --- to members of the forum, I found it easier and easier to minimize my own trading mistakes and become a better trader. The point I am trying to make: "What's the difference between a good trader and a great trader?", I would say experience.
So your comment/observation is quite true in the literal sense of less time, but it has had the opposite effect on my monthly statements - they are now better than ever . A year ago, before the forum, I traded 6 hours a day (actual in and out of positions) plus spent another 6 to 8 hours a day working on trading related stuff. Today I trade one to two hours a day, usually less, and still spend another 10 to 12 hours on trading related stuff, but this time most of that "stuff" is the forum. Before this "stuff" was mind numbing indicator tweaking, backtesting, strategy writing, etc. Now it's all the forum, whether it be technical aspects or replying to posts and helping others. One thing I really enjoy is reading and replying to other peoples journals. I find it very rewarding. It helps me keep my A-game for being a trader, and it is also something I want to do and that I enjoy doing.
I am starting to ramble a bit, but lets just say that the one to two hours I spend trading today are far more fruitful than the 6 hours I used to spend. So less trades, less time in that 'mode', and more to show for it.
I am now closer than I was last year to reaching my ultimate goal, which is to move somewhere outside of the US (some Caribbean island) and have the financial ability to do anything I want, including nothing at all.
I think the design is superb compared to any other forum I have visited and the reason it has become so popular so quickly. I don't think you should make a lot of changes to it. However, one problem is that I will post something and forget about it, then someone will respond or ask a question that doesn't get answered. If technically feasible, I would like to see a section listing the 10 most recent threads I have posted to so it is easy for me to follow up on my posts. Also, because most people don't always update the downloads section, it would be nice to be able to filter searches to only include posts that have attachments. As far as the elite thing goes, I think you should charge all members a nominal monthly fee ($5 to $10) to be able to post and download. If you aren't a member, then you can only view the posts. If you start making a buttload of money and feel generous, then have a monthly giveaway or something.
In UserCP you have these tabs for seeing your recent posts and threads.
1) We are working on an all-new Download section. It will be stellar compared to the current one.
2) I've already commissioned a new custom feature that allows forum members to search Globally, all posts all threads, and to search based on attachments within those posts. Due to all the other projects currently being worked on, our programmer can't get to this one until 3-4 weeks from now most likely.
Here is a preview of the Global Attachments Search mod. This one is for moderators only, it is being customized to allow regular users to use it to search for results. But it will look similar, just have some different functionality over what the mods use it for.
