For home users, any DSL, Cable Modem, or FiOS would all be fine for most discretionary trading in terms of speed. The advantages of renting a server from a facility are that server runs 24/7, is separate from your home machine and not subject to interruptions or bloated software, etc, and for automated strategies the reduced latency can mean a lot of extra money in your pocket (faster/better executions).
