A few years ago we were traveling out of the country for 3 months. We got back and filed for health insurance to pick back up. Well, my daughter decided to 'eat' a plastic spoon and as she couldn't breath after 10 seconds and I couldn't clear her airway I decided to grab her like a football and race to the hospital. By the time we got there she started breathing again and I rushed in and demanded a CAT scan and full workup.
Nice 8K bill came the next week. Shootz, that was a full months of losses on the TF. haha....
From a trading point of view it sucks to live in NZ.
But for dog bites it's great!! Well actually any ACCIDENT.
A governemnt body that is funded from levies pays for almost all the costs associated with accidents and it covers people visiting NZ as well. So those poor people who lost their lives in the recent earthqauke will receive some compensation (or more correctly their familes will) and those who were injured will have their treatment covered by this scheme - ACC.
It was originally set-up to stop people sueing each other over accidents.
Sorry to hear about this Mike . Ive hand tendon injury and surgery and having it tended to quickly is critical , sounds like you avoided very major damage . Hope they dont try to take your dogs as well . Youll pull through fine I know and we'll be rooting for ya .
Sorry to hear about you're misfortune today Mike. Sometimes ya just know it's time to hit the emergency ward, and this was one of them. Hope all turns out well. We'll be thinking about you.

Get well Big Mike, my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

Just a side note: These situations are impossible in most countries in Europe. You go to a hospital, they fix you, end of story. You need surgery, they book you, they do surgery on you. End of story. You don't pay like anything.
I'm self employed, my heal insurance costed me like $25 for 3 months, that covers everything, medications, surgerys, hospital stays, doctor visits, dentals, everything.
I don't think anyone does himself a favor by not being insured on purpose. Not only can hospital bills ruin you ( unless you are trading 100 CLs per click), it also leads to bad decisions when you are sick.
Personal income tax is 55%, sales tax is 21% and then on top you have a list of taxes you cannot imagine in your worse nightmare. Bottom line is, you keep 20% of your money, and when you do something with that 20% you get taxed on it.
