For those who are interested, Ivolatility.com has a charting package that plots futures IV intraday. The data is
15 minute delayed. The cost is $29.00 per month. They also have real time IV intraday charting for more $, but
the 15 minute delayed has been sufficient for me.
I have no connection to ivolatility.com. This is just information.
I only chart the IV of the item I am interested in. Usually the 30Day IV. I usually use the 15 minute chart.
The historical charts are available, but I never use them. You have a choice of futures or equities for $29.00
I only use futures.
I'm yet to find a really good book on practical trading of options. Eg use of strategies under varying market conditions. I've always learnt by doing, and have so built up knowledge on options trading do's and do not's and a good knowledge of valuation and risk of these from my day job.
Any recommended reading? Specifically on application of various spreads in various market conditions. Eg when are credit spreads good to look at. When do people trade iron condors. What conditions do people look to write options. Based on time, iv, and strength of directional bias. As well as how much emphasis to put on the Greeks in your trading. Etc
Based on your description I would recommend reading: Option Volatility & Pricing: Advanced Trading Strategies and Techniques written by Sheldon Natenberg.
Book description:
One of the most widely read books among active option traders around the world, "Option Volatility & Pricing" has been completely updated to reflect the most current developments and trends in option products and trading strategies. It covers pricing models, volatility considerations, basic and advanced trading strategies, and risk management techniques. Written in clear, easy-to-understand fashion, the book points out the key concepts essential to successful trading.Drawing on his experience as a professional trader, author Sheldon Natenberg examines both the theory and reality of option trading. He presents the foundations of option theory, and shows how this theory can be used to identify and exploit trading opportunities. He explains a wide variety of trading strategies and shows how to select the strategy that best fits each trader's view of market conditions and individual risk tolerance. The new sections include: expanded coverage of stock option; strategies for stock index futures and options; a broader, more in-depth discussion volatility; analysis of volatility skews; and intermarket spreading with options.
Thanks, that's a good price and it looks like the chart quality is better than in IV GRAPH.
It would be nice if they tracked ATM volatility for actual contracts, rather than solely offering their interpolated IV index, but for many products and for most of the year, the IV Index might be close enough/good enough. When things are hot though, like in NG and KC recently, there can be large gaps between the 'smoothed' IV index and the IV of the contracts we have to trade.
I also sell naked option and am also looking for someone who follows the same approach as what I do. Basically, I use the approach outlined in "James_Cordier,_Michael_Gross: The_Complete_Guide_To_Selling_Options"
I looked at the link that you suggested in your profile but unfortunately I don't read Russian. Do you normally post on here or other forums. I'm keen to bounce ideas off each other regarding possible trade setup etc......
